As we gratefully wind down this year’s cold and flu season, now is a good time to take a breather (a nice, unclogged deep breath) to organize, and in some cases restock, the medicine cabinet.

Spectrum Stone Designs, Central Virginia’s leading natural stone fabricator, offer some tip on organizing the medicine cabinet.

Take it all out – Dump everything from the medicine cabinet into a box and find a space to work. While you’ve got everything removed, take the opportunity to clean the shelves.

Divide into categories – You may figure out your own system based on the needs of your family, but here are some suggestions: Separate items into categories such as: Vitamins, Daily Medications, First Aid, Adult OTC (over-the-counter), Kids OTC.

Should it stay or should it go? – Dispose of all expired medicines. Here is a link to an infographic from the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that should help: http://bit.ly/2EfGU36. It covers everything from how to find drug take-back options in your area, determining if your drug is on the FDA flush list, what to do if it is and what to do if it is not on the FDA flush list. The graphic also provides links for further information.

Make a list of restock items – Was the pollen particularly brutal on your decongestion arsenal? Did all of the child pain or upset tummy meds get used? It’s best to plan ahead now when no one needs it to avoid those midnight drug store runs.

Clear container organization – For easy stocking, each container should be thought out for the size of the cabinet as well as the categories you selected. Label each container with one category. Stock correct items in each and place in the medicine cabinet.

The next time you or someone you love is sick, instead of digging through a jungle of plastic bottles, you can easily pull out the plastic box that fits your need and remove an item without disrupting the rest. It’s like getting a little relief before starting the road to recovery. Trust us. The future you will thank you.
