From modern to coastal to traditional and beyond, every kitchen, bathroom, and home we’ve done work in has had its own, unique style. Not only do we at Spectrum Stone Designs love seeing the way you’ve designed your homes, but we also love giving input when people need help figuring out their own style and taste. Because there are so many different home design styles, we want to break down the 13 top home decorating styles to give you a better idea of your taste and to get you inspired by other styles that you may not have even known existed.

1. Traditional

Even if you don’t consider your style traditional, most people have at least one item or design in their home that could be considered traditional. It can also be considered classic or historical. Traditional styles usually involve furniture, colors and textures that have been popular for decades, even centuries. The DIY Mommy says traditional can also feel very glamorous with rich fabrics of different colors and dark wood furniture, but also neutral colors like white and beige.

2. Modern

Modern style means clean lines with bold but minimal accessories, as modern stylists tend to go with larger items to make a room stand out like artwork. Decorilla says modern style usually consists of a neutral palette with bold, colorful statement pieces for furniture. Consider a neutral gray wall and neutral white floors, with a bright, turquoise sofa and a large piece of artwork hanging above it.

3. Minimalist

Decorilla says modern and minimalist, our next style, can have similarities like minimal accessories and clean lines. Minimalist may be a bit different, as it comes from a Japanese idea of less is more, meaning the accessories may be even more minimal. If your style is minimalist, you likely will have neutral colors, no patterns and lots of texture. And because someone with a minimalist style thinks less is more, they may have a lot of furniture that doubles as storage.

4. Mid-Century

Also nodding to Japanese culture is mid-century with its warm wood and brown tones and chrome plumbing. House Beautiful says the style refers to design from the middle of the 20^th century, mostly 1940s – 1970s. Mid-century can also have a retro feel at times with statement chairs with skinny, clean-lined legs for instance.

5. Bohemian

If you like a lot of decor in your home, or maybe you just enjoy mixing different colors and patterns, you may have a bohemian style. The DIY Mommy says this style is almost the opposite of minimalist where less is more. Bohemian can mean more is more! Bright and rich colors, a mix of textures and handmade items are all signs of a bohemian vibe. If you go boho, it’s hard to have too much décor.

6. Modern Farmhouse

Rustic features with big, cozy furniture are traits of this décor style, says the DIY Mommy. Neutrals with antiques and reclaimed wood are some of the popular parts of the modern farmhouse style. Many people may think of Joanna Gaines when they hear farmhouse style. In recent years, Gaines has even added a more modern touch to her famous farmhouse style, keeping things a bit simpler and cleaner, while still having a rustic, laid-back feel.

7. Coastal

Decorilla says you don’t have to live at the beach to have a coastal style in your home. It really is just a way to embrace natural elements within your home. Using natural colors like blues, greens and natural woods can easily give a home a coastal vibe. If you are looking to give your home a coastal feel, you want to keep things light and breezy, mixing in lots of whites and light fabrics with your blues and greens that can symbolize water, sky and greenery. 

8. Mediterranean

Mediterranean style is very culturally rich, starting in countries along the Mediterranean Sea like Italy, Greece and Spain. The style can resemble the architecture that is still in those countries today with lots of arches and columns. Decorilla says like the coastal style, Mediterranean also uses earth tones such as beiges, blues, and greens, but usually with this style those colors are deeper and bolder.

9. Transitional

House Beautiful says transitional style is when a house bridges the gap between modern and traditional. This can be a great style if you like a mix of both and just can’t decide which route to take. Transitional style may show traditional herringbone style floors with modern clean lines on appliances. Transitional design can be the perfect happy medium when designing your home.

10. Industrial

Industrial style can mimic a warehouse, with lots of steel and other metals mixed with dark wood. Dark colors throughout and exposed pipes and hardware are other traits of industrial.

11. French Country

The DIY Mommy says this style comes straight from the country of France and ties in with the lifestyle of its people. Glamorous features and big patterns are a big part of the French country style. If you want to add a touch of French country to your home, try adding floral patterns, stripes and vintage and antique-style furniture and décor. 

12. Scandinavian 

Scandinavian style tends to be very organic and cozy. Usually, the wood tones in this style are lighter and blend in well with the crisp whites and straight lines that you see with this vibe. Decorilla says an impressive quality of Scandinavian style is the craftsmanship that can often be seen in the furniture – which usually is built to last for both looks and functionality.

13. Feng shui

Last but not least is Feng shui. This Asian concept refers to arranging the furniture in your home to properly align yourself with nature. The Spruce says the goal is to establish harmony between a person and their environment. People with Feng shui style ensure furniture and accessories in their homes are balanced.
