The holidays come with hopefully a lot of joy, but they also can bring stress, and at Spectrum Stone Designs, we want to help you understand how to handle holiday stress.
Whether fresh off the loss of a loved one, overwhelmed with work or just feeling the effects of the Christmas hustle and bustle, here are some ways you can help bring some peace and calmness to your family during the remainder of the holiday season and hopefully into the new year.
Baking, cooking, entertaining, buying presents, dressing up for holiday parties, the list goes on and on! Some thrive on these types of activities while others find themselves struggling to keep their heads above water. Mayo Clinic reminds that this can lead to depression if not appropriately handled and the well-known medical center shares some ways to handle that holiday stress:
- Acknowledge your feelings – if you recently lost a loved one or can’t be with your loved ones this holiday season, it is healthy and normal to feel sadness and grief. Don’t try to mask those feelings and pretend to be happy just because Christmas is right around the corner.
- Be realistic – as time passes, people and traditions change. A holiday routine you remember as a child may not work as an adult, but you can always come up with new traditions or continue to make memories with loved ones that evolve as your family grows.
- Reach out – if you are struggling with your emotions during the holiday season, reach out to someone. Whether a relative, friend or even a doctor or phone line, having someone to talk to about your feelings can help you sort through them and help you realize you’re not alone.
Another way to handle holiday stress is to take it easy on the eating, drinking and spending, says Very Well Mind. All of these things in excess can send your normal routine way off track and make you feel negative emotions such as stress, anxiety and depression, not to mention take a toll on your physical health. Try to prioritize when you want to indulge. If you have two holiday parties in one week, maybe only attend one, or if you attend both, try to avoid excess sugars and fats that you wouldn’t normally eat outside of the holidays.
Healthline has a good reminder. Listen to your body and mind! Just like any time of the year, but especially during the holidays, don’t do anything that’s out of your comfort zone. If something makes you feel stressed, figure out why it makes you feel that way and then determine whether it’s worth having that as a part of your life, at least at the current time.
Here at Spectrum Stone Designs we know how important it is to manage stress during the holidays. We hope these reminders and tips can help you manage your stress during the holiday season.
We wish you and yours a happy holiday season and a Happy New Year.
