It probably started out simple. A box here. A step ladder there. And before you knew it, the attic was out of control. Out of sight. Out of mind. Until it either all came tumbling down or you got tasked with finding something amid the debris. Thankfully, you’ve entered the judgement-free zone. Nobody here cares how it happened. We only care about fixing it. Let’s figure out how to organize the attic.
1. PULL EVERYTHING OUT – This bold move will prevent a case of the “maybe’s” (maybe I’ll use this again; maybe I won’t). It may seem daunting, but you have to see everything you have to decide what is worth keeping.
2. DIVIDE INTO PILES – Create boxes for toss, donate and keep. Then put your items into those boxes depending on what you want to do with the pieces.
3. BAG UP TOSS & DONATE – Doing this immediately accomplishes two goals. Taking the trash out and donated items to the car ensures your next stop will be a donation center and all bags are out of your life forever. Plus, the pile left in front of you is now significantly smaller, sending your brain a visual cue of cleansing. The brain’s reward is a chemical release that excites and motivates further organization and often times more purging.
4. ORGANIZE MUST KEEPS – There are several tools to staying organized in any room. Hooks, clear bins, stackable bins, labeling machines. Did you know they even make stacked drawers angled to fit under a staircase that double as attic organizers? Use Google and Google images to figure out what works best for you.
5. PURGE EVERY BOX – Don’t just stick the boxes back in the attic. You’re in it. Commit to seeing this project all the way through. Make sure to donate, trash or reorganize every item you took out.
