How to Prepare
the Garden for Summer

Summer is here and that means a lot of you will be spending time outdoors, so how do you prepare the garden for summer? Gardening is a great outside activity and whether you’re new to the gardening game or a pro with petunias, we want to help you prep the garden for summer. Keeping it healthy will make it a more enjoyable experience for you and maybe you can even get the whole family involved.

The Survival Mom says to start by assessing your soil. The composition can change over time, so it’s smart to check in on its quality a few times a year.

Do your research! Make sure you know what grows best in your area. A hot, humid climate like in many parts of the deep South is going to work best for plants and flowers that may have a much slimmer chance of surviving in cooler, dryer areas of the country like the Northeast. In Central Virginia, Virginia Tech has some excellent resources on vegetable gardening.

Check your watering system, The Survival Mom reminds. The last thing you want is for a heat wave to ruin your fresh plants or crops. Check your sprinkler heads, hose valves, etc. to make sure everything is working properly.

The Garden Continuum reminds us of a good point – nature doesn’t take time off! In the hotter months, plants become hot as well, and thirsty, just like people. You have to give your garden proper nutrients including water or they’re not going to survive.

Mulch is a good way to help prep your garden for summer. It helps to keep weeds out and moisture locked in. Weed early! The longer you let weeds grow, the more time-consuming and possibly frustrating it will be to get those pesky weeds out. Not only can they be an eyesore, they also can hinder your plant growth, so stay on top of them!

Whether in the front or back yard or even on the side of your home, gardening can be a great learning experience for kids, and it can also be a relaxing and therapeutic activity for adults.
