How to Survive
a Bathroom Remodel

Spring is in the air, and that means spring cleaning and home improvement projects may be filling up your days. A fairly easy project, if done right, is a bathroom renovation. If done wrong, it can also be a potentially frustrating project with lots of headaches. At Spectrum Stone Designs, kitchens and bathrooms are our specialties. We know a thing or two about remodeling your favorite spaces, so we wanted to give some advice on how to survive a bathroom remodel without wanting to pull your hair out.

  1. Start with a Budget: Signature Hardware reminds us unexpected surprises in costs can be tough for the homeowner, so you want your budget planned before starting your remodel. Many times people don’t realize added costs can sneak in when remodeling a bathroom (just think of all the added costs you see on TV renovation shows). You may estimate the total of your new floors, countertops, cabinets, shower tile and fixtures, but may forget about the fees associated with moving the plumbing. If you’re not sure how much everything is going to cost, check with whoever you plan to hire for the work.

2. Decide What You Like and Don’t Like: Envision your new space and check in with friends and families with newer bathrooms. Ask what they do and don’t like about their new bathroom. You may love when you see ocean blue tile in showers in magazines, but will that work for your space? Pick out samples or research apps and programs that allow you to upload a picture of your space and play around with different design ideas. Our friends at Cambria have a great tool to help you design your space.

3. Determine Major Moves: Some bathroom remodels are simple and don’t involve moving appliances and fixtures, while others can be much more complicated, with lots of moving parts. Real Homes reminds us there are some parts of a bathroom that just aren’t worth the headache of moving, especially in a smaller space. Changing the placement of a bathtub, or even fully getting rid of one, can open up a bathroom. But you may want to reconsider changing things like the location of a faucet, as that also means changing the plumbing – what can be a more complicated project AND cost more money.

The Spruce also tells us a few things you want to keep in mind BEFORE the renovation starts. Discuss bathroom ventilation. Some sort of vent might be required by code for proper venting. Make sure to do your research if you go with a fan, as even just a quiet fan can still sound noisy in a small bathroom space.

4. Consider the Floors: Wood flooring is popular, and many people want to carry it into a bathroom. It really isn’t a realistic option when it comes to maintenance. The amount of moisture in a smaller space can cause damage such as splitting or cracking. Ceramic, porcelain and vinyl are just a few popular options that can withstand typical wear and tear in a bathroom.

There are many more do’s and don’ts when it comes to making a bathroom remodel stress free, and Spectrum Stone Designs would love to help you! We can be a part of your bathroom renovation by providing you with some of our beautiful stone for your countertops.
