The pandemic hit businesses hard, forcing many to temporarily close, losing precious income. Others weren’t so lucky and eventually had to close permanently. Now that Americans are beginning the recovery process, supporting small and local businesses has become even more important than before COVID. According to Fortune, nearly 100,000 businesses have permanently shut down. Even though the economy is slowly picking back up, many small businesses are still struggling and are having to seek financial help, so supporting small businesses in our area and throughout the nation, is very important right now.

So why support local? Forbes reminds us supporting local businesses means in turn supporting your own neighborhoods and community. Not only does it boost the local economy where you live and spend your time, but it’s also nice when a local business knows their customers’ names and interests and can have a personal relationship with them.

If you would like to show more support for local and small businesses, but aren’t sure the best ways how, here are some ideas:

  • If you don’t feel comfortable yet eating in a restaurant, support your favorite local food and drink businesses by ordering to-go orders or gift cards you can use at the restaurant at a later date.
  • If you have a favorite local business but are still avoiding going in, check in with them. See how they’re doing and maybe they have some changes in place that will allow you to still support them while also keeping your distance.
  • Tip service workers extra.
  • If you have a local subscription or membership, consider still paying it even if the business is still closed or if you don’t feel comfortable going in just yet. That way you’re still helping that business stay afloat and can patronize them in the future.

Another reason to consider shopping locally and/or small instead of always heading to big box stores or chains, is local businesses are more likely to donate and support non-profit organizations and other groups in your area, that may also be important to you. Supporting local business can also be good for the economy as they have a smaller carbon footprint.
